I have been seeing this pop up EVERY where lately, and as you all know, when I find a natural remedy or product for overall wellness, AND its holistic, I’m all over trying it, researching it and implement into my life. I don’t know about you, but I am down for anyway to stay ahead of the game and either shorten any window of colds or heaven forbid the flu. I think there is such an enormous world of alternative wellness practices, that if we allow ourselves to be open to it, we may just unlock the answers to these crazy super bugs!!!
Ok, so a new one that my sister-in-law told me about, and not that it’s actually NEW, as it’s an ancient remedy and use, actually, but that of using Oregano Oil. Now I use Doterra. Just to be clear, I AM NOT a rep, nor do I get any kickback from featuring their oils in this post, but they are my personal preference to be sure I am getting the best quality oils. I have included a contact of my “oil dealer” if you need someone informed and well educated on all things essential oils. Her name is Courtney.
There is no denying that we are in the thick of cold and flu season. NOBODY wants or has the time to be laid out. Now I will say that I am not a doctor, a nurse, or anything but just a mom of 4 who is passionate about holistic remedies & natural health care. There is so much that we just don’t explore enough, and I am one to explore, do the research, before running off to the doctor. I would so much rather take natures antibiotic than a pharmaceutical antibiotic and fortunately
knock on wood has been relatively healthy this season.
Let’s face it the germs are out there! It’s on our shopping carts, door handles, preschool, day care, workplace, you name it. Don’t know about you, but come hell or high water I am NOT going to get sick.
Properties of Oregano Oil: It is an immunity booster , antibacterial, antimicrobial, antiviral, antioxidant, aids in digestion, antiallergenic, anti-parasitic and an anti-inflammatory.
Oregano Oil Uses
There are many many uses of Oregano Oil and I encourage you to hit up Dr. Google and see what uses you might want to try. Here are a few I found:
•Treating foot or nail fungus. Put a few teaspoons of oregano oil in a basin of water and soak your feet in it. You can also dilute the oil (mix a drop with a teaspoon of olive or coconut oil), and then apply it on your nails or skin.
•Help in killing parasites and easing infections. Dilute the oil (mix a drop with a drop of a carrier oil such as coconut oil), and place it under your tongue. Hold it there for a few minutes, and then rinse it out. Repeat this at least four times a day.
•Alleviating sinus infections and colds. Put a few drops of oregano oil in a pot of steaming water, and then inhale the steam.
I also encourage using the antiseptic powers of this herbal oil to clean your home. Here’s one way how: combine four drops of oregano oil with 10 drops of lemon oil and a quarter-cup of white vinegar, and then add to a bucket of water. Use this mixture to wipe and clean surfaces. Say good-bye to all the nasty germs, without the dose of chemicals.
How We Use Oregano Oil
Since we are in cold and flu season I thought I would mainly share how we use this to fight the germs. My husband and I both use it and have had my older two kids use it (I would caution using it on younger kids) to cut down on the extend of any of the yucks. Using the oils and elderberry syrup (checkout my DIY recipe) are just a few of our staples during this awful time of the year (meaning, sickness-wise).
We use these small dixie cups and put one drop of oil into the cup and fill with filtered water and an 1/8 tsp of ibaking soda. Give it a little swirl and drink it like you would a shot. Try to get it in your mouth and to the back of your throat. Getting it on your lips it may be a little warm or tingly. You can also gargle for a few seconds like you would salt water to help soothe anything thats inflamed in your throat.
Never use Oregano Oil neat. Always mix with a carrier oil or liquid. Doing so could be harmful to your skin.
You can also put it in a bowl of steaming water and put your head over it with a towel and breathe in the vapors for about 5 or 10 minutes it will really help to open up the sinuses and break down any bacteria or any lingering virus that might be staying around.
